When lynchings were an accepted part of everyday life in many areas of the United States, were false accusations of rape against black men levied primarily by white men as an excuse for violence or by actual white women?

I'm not saying that no white woman ever falsely accused a black man of rape or attempted rape.  I'm asking for a clarification of where the majority of accusations came from.  Does anyone know?  Has it been studied?
