People make their own decisions.

One of the results of being powerful is that you probably know other powerful people.  A risk of knowing other powerful people is that, if they make bad decisions, you then have to craft responses to what they did.  Their bad decisions don't reflect on you unless you respond without integrity.  

I'm not saying it's not painful.  Integrity is demanding.
