Isn't directing mostly a question of who's willing to finance a movie?

Who are those people?

Who are the people who have turned the entertainment industry into what it is, who have written a blank check for the worst of human nature for decades?

I don't think that the ability to direct has a lot to do with age, and it definitely has nothing to do with gender.  It seems like a career that people should be better at, the older that they are.  The industry is dominated by immaturity, some of which is understandable from those who are younger and all of which is inexcusable from those who are older.
