I know how this office dynamic works. Someone doesn't train you meticulously and then blames you. Add misogyny and major class divisions among the staff and your days are numbered no matter what you do.
My guess is that Mr. Savage wasn't part of the in-crowd, either. The people near but not at the bottom rung of a ladder that they know they'll never climb can be the most hateful toward anyone below them whom they can make miserable or portray as being incapable to make themselves seem indispensable.
