Ms. Reade, I hate to tell you this.

I know that you didn't know.  The author started her essay with the same quote.  

You didn't know because it didn't continue to be discussed.  I don't know how many pages of results for a Google search of the term "Elie Wiesel" I would have had to read through before I heard about the story, if I hadn't already read it a few years ago.  I had to do the search specifically for the story today.  It's a good essay.

Now we know how not to treat adolescent guys if we're ever successful.  Nope, the world doesn't owe us, and they don't owe us.  We owe the world the truth; so far, so good, for our actions.
