1) Is the U.S. government following a policy of making everyone be quiet about hostages, with the rationale that they'll be less difficult to rescue if nobody knows about them? That doesn't seem to be a reliable policy.
2) Is the U.S. government silencing this hostage situation because President Trump does not want Americans suddenly agitating for increased involvement by the American military in Syria?
If so, then this is a situation in which the Russian government is attempting to be helpful and is being ignored.
If not, then I still think that there's a reason for the U.S. and Europe to have a discussion with President Putin about the situation.
If it is true, then it's an opportunity for international cooperation.
If it's not true, then someone needs to talk with the Russian government about it, so that it's not used as an excuse for additional aggression.
This entire page is a question, even though not every sentence is structured that way. Since I'm not a foreign policy professional, I have to say that all of it is a question.
