He didn't have to invite her; she has that backwards.  

In refusing his invitation, she is missing the opportunity to speak to him in person as eloquently as she wrote about her fiancé in the article.  

To be honest, everyone who is involved in the situation is trying to gauge the life of her fiancé and the implications of his assassination against other major concerns.
