I am pro-choice anyway, which I have already said. I was pro-choice before being told by a chronically homeless woman that she had had 10 children, and that one of them was born at a homeless shelter.
When I say that the shelter system is dysfunctional, I'm not exaggerating. Homeless shelters are potential points of intervention to help people understand and break the cycles that trap them, but most homeless shelters refuse that responsibility.
Instead of implementing discussions about reproductive health and decisions, the Pine Street Inn women's shelter eliminated its Pregnant Women's Program a few years ago. I think that was a mistake, and so does everyone else who subsequently heard about a pregnant, homeless woman who was given a top bunk and told that if she wanted a bed to sleep in that night, she'd have to take that top bunk, and the ladder that went with it. Are you unable to believe that type of cruelty from shelter employees is part of homeless life? Tell anyone who has been homeless that story, and I guarantee that person won't be surprised.
