I don't have to be an expert to recognize that's what's going on, that the world's democracies have turned into timid, fearful, selfish, self-congratulatory places. This is not all President Trump's fault. Two administrations in a row have allowed what is happening in Syria. It is a systemic failure of principle among leadership in the United States and around the world: leadership at every level and in every sector. Who's going to explain all of this to the next generation? "We were having some fun and didn't have time to worry about the implosion of reason; you understand, don't you?"
