I support racial equity.  That issue shouldn't be used to postpone gender equity yet again. 
If there is a survey or article that has researched protests by state and city in the context of state culture and other factors, it's not immediately apparent from Google searches.  I don't think that the situation in any city or state can be pinned on individual politicians in those places.  The United States is a big country, and life varies a lot from one state to another. 
Things are pretty quiet in the Boston area.  The main sign here of national unrest is a wariness in daily encounters that wasn't there before.
