I don't know how horrific something is going to have to be before its impact is taken seriously.
People who haven't been through it are not necessarily understanding the implications, even when they understand the origin and impact of more traditional forms of abuse.
Healing is impossible; you don't heal, you cope as much as you can with the vicious monstrosity that has been forced on you and everyone in your life, forever. It ruins mental health. It ruins relationships. It ruins employment. It ruins everything, and it never stops. You live in the ruin.
It also causes offline stalking and physical assault. My guess is that it also correlates to higher percentages of acquaintance rape; you can't know if someone whom you meet online is genuine or has heard of you from the "slut" reputation that the hysterically laughing perpetrators of your visual gang rape have given you over all of your protests and pleadings.
It's a crime for which the victim can never receive absolution; that's why some people call it revenge porn. It is meant as punishment.
