I'll explain it for people who don't understand.

When you know that someone shares your opinion, it's a safe assumption that he or she will make decisions that you agree with.

When you know that someone doesn't share your opinion, then you have to replace assumption with persuasion.  Persuasion might not work, but it's not a waste of time.  

The smarter the person is, the less susceptible he or she will be to being persuaded by insults, generalizations, and everything else that requires the least amount of intellectual discipline.
